4 Tools for a National & MN State Parks Unit Studies

The National and State Parks are an amazing way to experience United States history, geography, and other interest-led subjects you and your child might want to explore.

Every Kid Outdoors Pass

If you have a fourth grader or a soon-to-be fourth grader, be sure to get your free pass to experience America’s natural wonders and historic sites with the Every Kid Outdoors pass! For the whole school year, any U.S. fourth-grade student or homeschool equivalent can get a free pass for all children under 16 and up to three adults to any historic site or U.S. national park that charges entrance fees (as well as covering one vehicle entrance fee).

Rock the Park
A Film Series from Minnesota Natives Jack Steward & Colton Smith

The Rock the Park film series is a great way to explore the national parks and historic sites before you go in-person, or as an adventure from home. The creators of the Rock the Park Series – Jack Steward and Colton Smith – are Minnesota natives who met in elementary school in Excelsior! Full episodes are streaming on YouTube. They are also available through the affordable documentary streaming service Curiosity Stream

The Minnesota State Parks Passport Club

If you are a family that enjoys tracking your adventures, consider becoming part of the Minnesota State Parks Passport Club. For $14.95, you get a club book to stamp at all the Minnesota State Parks you visit. When you have 25 stamps, you qualify for a free two-night camping certificate. When you collect all the stamps, you qualify for a second two-night camping certificate and a plaque.

 I Can! Programs

Whether or not you enjoy tracking the state parks you’ve visited, the I Can! Programs through the Minnesota DNR provides free and low-cost opportunities to explore new adventures like paddling a canoe, camping, mountain biking, fishing, and archery. Younger kids might enjoy working towards a Junior Ranger badge

What other national or MN state parks adventures would you recommend to other homeschooling families? What resources have you found helpful?
